Flânerie

Flânerie is the duo formed by the historical violinist Saaya Ikenoya and the fortepianist Mako Kodama. This daring and vibrant ensemble aims to explore the soundscape of the 18th and 19th centuries to shed light on its hidden gems.

With education from renowned institutions such as London’s Royal College of Music, Leipzig’s Hochschule für Theater und Musik, and Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, they bring together their expertise and a shared passion for musical discovery and experimentation.

Saaya and Mako breathe new life into forgotten chamber works, offering audiences an exciting journey through the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Flânerie aims to delve into the evolution of the fortepiano, the emergence of virtuosic music shaped by the French Violin School, and the wealth of extraordinary works by women composers, whose contributions, though often overlooked, were equally vital to the musical landscape of their time.

Since teaming up in 2021, they’ve performed in chamber music series and festivals across the Netherlands, Japan, and France delighting audiences with their engaging and insightful performances. In January 2025, they will record their debut album, set to be released by Da Vinci Publishing.

Following their mission of sharing the magic and vibrancy of this fascinating musical era, this CD will be an intimate contemplation of 19th-century Germany's soundscapes including the Mendelssohn siblings, Clara Schumann, Emilie Mayer, and Joseph Joachim, offering us a glimpse into the restless Romantic heart.
